I haven't gotten that far yet but it involves using the transporters
trying looking for something to put in the transporter before you go
I think it resets it (this from memory for a message I read so its
not 100%).
Has anyone found the princess if so how worthwhile is she as an NPC?
What are her stats, alignment and class?
Thanks,
Chris.

To change the setting of the teleporters in the maze in the pyramid, you
must first throw a stone through. This sets the teleporter (assuming you
are given the option) to its secondary target location. The object is to
only use the teleporters that you can control, the others are just traps
that move you to different parts of the maze. The princess is a Barbarian
fighter and a strong one to boot. I don't remember her stats but you
probabily wont need to because she leaves soon after you find her. She is
in the prison area of the Kobald Caves. As for the Fine Composite bows, I
found 2 pair of Gauntlets Of Ogre Power in the game and this gave my
players a chance to really use the composite bows. The speed increace of
the 386 machine will only be so much. I played on a IBM 386 machine though
it was faster than the 50's it was not as fast as would be expected
because you still have to watch the video routines of the battles, and
this REALLY slows the battles down. I would warn however that thought the
battles are slow beware that you dont mis some of the critical messages
that may flash by on a 386. I missed some and had to redue a section to
find out what I missed.

I've been asked for advice on this game, but since I haven't played it,
I'm posting this message here. Does anyone have any tips/tricks/techniques
for removing (permamently) the troll/ogre combination in the slums?
5MM Wed Feb 01, 1989
J.PICKARD [Miami Joe]
I finally found the IBM version and it took 18 !!!! minutes to install. I
used save game A (the included characters) and thought my first battle
which I blundered into while trying to view my different characters was
great !!! I slaughtered 2 orcs before my mage put MY group to sleep !! I
have to remember to aim sleep spells !! Needless to say, I never made it
to my second battle! This game is great!! Praise Odin I only have to
install this game once on my AT with a hard drive.... forget playing this
on a PC with floppies!!! I enjoyed the combat and can't wait to meet the
75 zombies in the grave- d*s

I am not shure what exactly you mean by perminantly removing the
troll/ogre combination from the slums. I found that for some encounters I
could just run away and the encounter would not reapear. This helped if
you want to get guarded goodies but are to week to actually win the battle
with the guards. You won't get any of the goodies that the guards were
carring. Hope this helps. If not drop me a note with any questions you
have.

Well Phoenix, according to what I've heard from someone else who played
the game, if you don't kill all the trolls fast enough, they start coming
back to life again, and they're tough customers. That's what I meant by
"permanently removing them". In any case, a friend of mine was able to
offer some advice I could pass along.

Well, I formed my own gruop of characters and that was how I got the
guided tour of PHlan !!! Forget using the included party !!! I was kicking
fanny in the slums when my magic user got waxed with one blow...I did not
have enough gold to resurrect her, so I dropped her (in a ditch), but
cannot figure out how to roll up a new magic-user and add her to the
group. helpppp!! I have the IBM version. Can I do this ???

I use the Commodore version but to roll up a character of a particular
aclass you have to have the die rolls for that class high enough to get
that class. The computer will give you a list of the types you can have
with a particular set of atti tibutes. Magic Users have to be high in
wisdom and dexterity. Just keep rolling until you get a set that gives
you what you want.

Go to the training halls, go to one of the training rooms say YES
when they ask if you wish to train and the Create Modify Drop Add etc.
menu will come up and you can make and add a new PC.

Well I have recently restarted on my 386 and combat is soooo much
nicer. It takes 1-2 seconds per move for my enemies now instead of
up to 30 seconds for some of the longer moves. The VGA monitor also
sharpens up the EGA graphics quite a bit. I have created a new
party with more (3 to be exact) single class characters I only had
one in my last party and I found the progress to be a little too
slow, but fighter/mage fighter/thief combos are still useful. I
only wish they had Arcana rules so I could have included a nice
Fighter/Cleric or even real AD&D rules so I could've had a Paladin
or a ranger instead of a boring fighter, oh well!
Back to the dungeons...
Chris.

Hello, I am a C-64 user of POL and have enjoyed it greatly-graphics are
excelent and moves and combat do not take an ove excesive time, though I
often have time to read between My moves , you do not have to watch them.
As for me, I have cleared out Sokal Keep, the Slums(execpt for one small
area), Kutos Well, and am working on the surrounding areas, I have two
questions-
I have levels of 6-3, how do I beat the Stupid trolls-even with flasks
also, what is the secret word for the undead in sokal keep, they are a
realy time taker, plus, what does the elfs mesage mean?
please tell me , those Trolls are my BIGGEST problem!
raistlin
------------
Message 12 Sat Feb 18, 1989
C.MULLER
Wow those are some high levels for where you've been! Anyway if
one of those sixth level characters is a mage (and I think a pure
mage - only one - is VERY useful) then nail them with a fireball.
If you don't have that option get a hero from the training hall
for the front line and a mage for the back line and then kill the
trolls and ONLY the trolls first with ranged weapons and spells and
put your strongest fighters on the one troll who can engage you in
melee. You may want to cast a hold person on the ogres so they will
just be helpless sheild between you and the trolls. If you fight more
than one troll at a time in melee you're history in most cases. I
think you get the idea.
As for the password, the dead elf is the key here translate the words
and try them out...
I'm about to go to Zentil Keep then the Lizard Men and then to
the Castle! This game is VERY enjoyable if you have a machine that
has some power - meaning a 286 or above and a fast EGA or VGA board
helps and a hard drive is a must! Assuming you have the above as I
do I'd rate this game a 9 on a scale of 1-10 for those people who
have played and enjoyed the AD&D system as I have. I still wish
they would've included more classed, oh well. In any case the combat
is conducted exactly as you would do it on a hex map with figures,
you have full control its the best combat I've seen. The other thing
is the "feel" of the game, anyone who has played an AD&D module will
recognize as early as the slums this "feel" of a good AD&D module.
If you have a good IBM type machine or are patient and like AD&D
don't miss this game!
Later,
Chris.
Oops on line 22 classed should read classes...

Well, I'm finished! I can't wait for the next one to come out.
From Falcon AT to Sentinel Worlds to Pools of Radiance my 386 with
VGA graphics have made all games VERY fast and easy to play. In
practical terms all fun, and no wait!
To think I started playing this game on an Atari ST with PC Ditto
running at 20% of PC(4.77) speed! Now I can judge a game based on
the game itself not on disk access and redraw time etc., and based
on the game itself I think Pools of Radiance is alot of fun for
anyone who likes AD&D. For those of you with slow machines and no
patience you may find this game moves to slow, but if you like
real combat (and combats of this size would take a LONG time if
played by real players in an AD&D game) and the feel of AD&D don't
miss this one.

Chris.

There are 2 BAAADDDD rooms to pick the lock on in the slums... The archers
take out my cleric and magic user first every time !!! What is the best
method to handle these 2 rooms ?? y party is still first level. It seems
that at least 2 mages and 2 clerics are necessary to your party. Any
suggestions?
------------
Message 15 Sat Feb 25, 1989
C.MULLER
As far as mages go you can never get enough although I would recommend
no more than one true mage. The rest should be fighter/mages. As
for having two clerics it is very useful early in the game and in
the Graveyard, but otherwise I find a pure fighter or a figther/mage
much more useful. What I did was create one pure cleric and then
used the acolyte hireling until I got so rich (at about 3rd or 4th
level) that I did ALL my healing at the temples anyway and my cleric
became nothing more than a poor fighter. I also brought my NPC
cleric when I went to the Graveyard (using Dirten would be a good
idea too - you'll meet him later). Otherwise, I used Skullcrusher
as my 4th frontline man with 3 men in the back. I prefer a party
size of 7, 6 PCs one NPC I find the 8th player to be (in most cases)
extraneous and it further divides experience that could go to your PCs.
As for enemy archers try moving your PCs into the range of a sleep
spell (about 4 or 5 squares at your level) and cast it on the archers
that should do the trick. It also helps if you have at least 2 archers
of your own in the back ranks. If you have anyone in the back ranks
who can't fire missle weapons or spells you've mad a bad choice. I
would advise against a pure theif because I found it almost impossible
to backstab and that is the thief's most useful combat ability. Use
a combination thief foa better pty.
Good Luck,
Chris.

while i just got this game today, and cleared you the slums, sokal keep,
and the catacombs. i also killed an undead liege creating more undead in
the grave yard. i also finished the podol plaza mission, but haven't
cleared it... i like the message it gave me when i destroyed the pitt.
also i killed the podol version of the temple of bane. in the graveyard i
was drained, so i need to
get a restoration spell. where do you get these? i was stoned in the
library, but i think i found all the nessecary books... in the graveyard
what do you need to do other than killing the spectar? (on trolls in rope
guild i used sleep and then hacked my way through with my level 2
characters) in the sokal keep i found that an effective stratagy is to
hide behind the west wall and use arrows to pick off the goblin chiefs as
they cross over. then concentrate on the other monsters. how do you clear
kuto's well block? i cleared the well itself, but need to know where to go
to clear the rest of the block. also where can i get some magic user
scrolls? why do some long bows sell for 10 gold and others for 25? where
can i get some magic arrows or other magic items? thanks for the help
(hint hint hint)...

Where'd you find the2efreet bottle? I searched all over, I found the
treasure in the secret room, and the treasure in the wyvern lair, but no
bottle... the dragon is getting impatient with me!
In Valhingen cemetery, (did you clear the whole place?) I found a note
detailing the killing of the vampire by a previous adventurrer... I think
his bones (vampire's) are in the cross-shaped building in the NE corner of
the cemetery... to get there, you have to have cleqared out all the other
monsters; the path is heavily guareded by w wights, but if you have high-
level characters, you caqan manage it...
What I want to know is is there another live vampire I'm supposed to kill?

you kill the old vampire (remember to DESTROY that coffin!) also, it
starts out wounded from the last fight it had (again, coffin was broken...
but not destroyed, ev idently the vampire had the spectres create zombies
to destroy the holy
symbols thereby allowing it to live). i fought the vampire twice, and
killed him, but couldn't get the effrettie out of the bottle. i also
completed the quest for the bottle, and found a lizard castle in the ne
part of the swamp/forest. about ideal characters, i had 1 female human
mage, 1 male human mage,1 dwarf fighter/thief, 1 human cleric, and 2 human
fighters. good luck, and remember to SCRIBE scrolls so you can learn new
spells.

Message 22 Wed Mar 08, 1989
C.MULLER
You find the vampire in the NE corner of the graveyard at first, at which
point you battle him (if you have the bottle the Efreeti will fight for
you). If you are victorious he retreats to his coffin in the cross-shaped
room. If you have done something to the coffin he will be unable to enter
his coffin and will be there when you arrive. Here you must battle him
again and one you defeat him the graveyard is cleared, and you can collect
your reward in town.
As for females I found gender to have absolutely no affect in this game
but I had two females anyway just for variety. There are certain classes
(e.g. cleric and mage) where you lose nothing by using a female
character, so I figured better safe than sorry. Maybe in one of the
future modules it will make a difference. In any case, it does give you a
little variety in choosing character pictures and icons as there were very
few acceptable choices in either catagory and having a female or two made
it easier to have more unique pictures and icons. However, I strongly
recommend that under no circumstances do you use a female fighter, losing
that percentile strength is not worth having a pretty picture. As far as
fighters and AD&D are concerned ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE which leaves
women out (no offense Scorpia!) at least in reguards to the fighter class
in AD&D.
I don't remember where exactly I found the bottle, I think it was after I
defeated the Kobold king, but I'm not sure... In any case, it wasn't
hidden or anything, it shouldn't be hard to find.

Chris

BARRACUDA
Information: The Apple ][ version of P.O.R. has finally been released. For
me, it wasn't worth the wait. The game comes on 8 5-1/4" disk sides (4
disks) with a code wheel, manual, story/guide book, etc. The disks are not
copy protected and should copy with a normal utility, but are _not_ a
standard OS. As near as I can tell, SSI used RDOS, a nonstandard DOS 3.3
variant. You guessed it. No hard disk/ramdisk installation. Starting the
game required 6 disk swaps before the title screen came up on an Apple
//e.
Graphics were marginally acceptable, considering that they looked
like standard Hi-res on the monitor I had available. Probably not playable
in monochrome. An accelerator chip/card or a GS (perhaps also with an
accelerator) helps a great deal (for myself I'd call it mandatory).
Also, in keeping with the Apple version of Dungeon Master's Asst., I
saw a couple of mispellings within the first few screens... not a very
good sign for what lies within.
Recommendation: Try it before you buy it. You'll probably want an
accelerator of some type in whatever machine you run it on. If you hate
swapping disks, stay clear. (I didn't buy it...)

I just finished POR a few days ago. Overall I give the game a 6.5 on a
scale of 10. I found the plot extremely thin, and I can't remember a
single combat that I didn't use quick combat on after clearing the
slums(this includes the storming of Stojanow gate, the castle, and even
the final encounter!). The only reason that I was able to finish it is
that the game play on my 386 is very fast(I quit and reload the game in
less than 5 seconds). I am sure that if I played the game on a regular PC
or AT that I could not have endured the arduous dela that SSI has a good
base to work from but I am looking forward to a much improved and more
interesting sequel.

If you wait to heal your group after (between battles) the trolls will get

as soon as you can.... Nothing I have found keeps the trolls down
forever..... So timing and luck.... save the game before the encounter....

I find it very anoying that one can not have mixed characters such as the

violate the original D&D rules. Why can we not have these very useful and

Also I find it anoying that there are limited levels for elves and half-

that characters of multiple professions adds depth to tHE GAME!

aren't that bad, just take peresistence. Save before the battle, and keep
doing the battle over 'til you get lucky :)

I suppose because I killed everything else in the slums the game decided
that the area had been cleared out. In fact I kinda forgot about the

I just got the Apple II version and am very disappointed in the time it
takes to accomplish anything. The interface is about the worst I have
seen in a long time, although the game may turn out to be good. From the
descriptions I have seen earlier in this topic, it sounds like the Apple
version must have been severely pruned back to make it fit on four disks.
Does anyone know a way to put the Apple II version on hard disk, or is
there a possibility of a IIGS specific version that can be put on hard
disk. I don't really see a reasonable way to play this if disk swapping
and rebooting take forever. Thanks. - Doc -

Concerning Trolls,
If you're having problem with Trolls, you might try this:
Go back to the hiring halls and enlist a hero. Equip
him/her with a good bow and arrows and ready his/her arrows
sot that he/she can provide range fire. In this battle the
Trolls are behind the Orges, so defeat the Trolls first.
Just have eveybody fire arrows and spells untill the trolls
go down. Then kill off the Orges fast. Trolls do get back up
so you better kill the Orges fast. Also, you can always
push the Orges back (if this is possible) and stand on the
square the troll has occupied, the troll can't get back
up if you're standing on him. Hold and sleep spells are basiclly
useless here. Try throwing Missle spells and Strength spells.
Also, make sure you have your toughest fighters on the front line.
Cause they're gonna take a serious beating from the Orges before
those Trolls go down. Also, SAVE, SAVE!

I have played POR for a while now. It is without a doubt the tbest game
that calls itself ADND. The combat system, the way the spells work, and
the storyline are tops. However I just got Hillsfar and really got a
shock. The game is in no way like POR. Different game mechanics, different
everything. I bought the game because it was marjeted under the forgotten
realms label and thought that it would look like POR. Unless you like very
arcade like games Hillsfar is not for you. I just hope that curse of the
azure bands is like POR. Unfortunetly I think that the team that did
Hillsfar is also doing Azure band. As an aside I was also disappointed in
Heros of the Lance. It is so much easier to make a game based on reaction
time then one that is based on thought and skill. jacob farber

I couldn't agree more. Except on one point-
I think POR is great except for the combat system.
The problem with the combat system is that it takes just too darn long.
I had a battle with about 30 orcs that lasted 2 hours. I know, everybosy
says the high your chars the faster you cna kill the nasties. Not true.
You can only throw so many sleep and hold spells. I mean, my goodness.
Also, I was in the fast mode! POR is great, but I think SSI should make
an option to allow players who don't like to spend 2 hours fighting
to fight faster. Maybe they could set something up like Migh
and magic has. But they should leve it as an option cause
many people like the way it is now, expect for me. -Crag

Yeah... I hate the trolls and the wrights !!!! I can usually get all but
the last troll in the rope guild before my party gets waxed... Argghhh. I
usually take a swordsman, hero, or warrior along for the front line and an
acolyte for the back line..they draw missile fire and attacks, you can
have the acolyte cast heal spells after a battle, and if the get waxed..
so what... drop them in a ditch and return to the training hall. I dislike
evoker, he is a wimp and never seems to cast spells until the battle is
over. He will never move closer to get in better dart range. I have
cleared the Well, the slums, mapped the library (do you need the Knock
spell to get in ???) fpom the outside, and fought in the textile area, but
cannot last long in there. ( 4 battles max), wandered around west of the
city.... where should I go next ??? Sokal Keep or keep trying the Textile
area ??? Both look pretty tough My characters are level 2-4. I have also
gotten my party waxed 3 times in tavern brawls in New Phlan!!! The brawls
get tougher as your party does, the Pitt was a picnic compared to my last
tavern brawl.... about 10 4th Level fi ghters and 12 aides vs my party and
about 12 1st level thieves... we got our clocks cleaned !!! This is THE

ALWAYS a boring brawl that started soon after I entered. Unless you really

I found I needed a Knock to get into the library, but you may want to wait
awhile on that one, as your group probably isn't up to taking on a spectre

Hillsfar was designed to be arcadish and is not a continuation of
the POR story line. Azure Bonds is the second part in the series
Hillsfar is sort of of a stop gap entertainer to raise your party
in level while you wait for Azure Bonds. Azure Bonds will allow
Rangers and Paladins, AT LAST! It was somewhat limiting to only
be allowed the 4 basic D & D character types. As for the combat
I have a 386 VGA (Read very fast) and I love every bit of the full
blown tactical combat. Its just like those live battles on the
hex grid as you and your party members position yourself for battle
declare spells, roll dice, etc. I must say though that the option
to have a non-graphic quick combat system as in Wizard's Crown would
be very nice for those people who don't like the tactical combat or
for battles that are no longer a challenge (e.g. your 8th level party
vs 50 orcs). Do to my fast machine and hard drive this was one of my
favorite games of the year, however I may have felt differently if
I had a 4.77 Mhz PC with no hard drive (yuk!), but I don't! Therefore,
I anxiously await Azure Bonds and the Paladin (and possibly a Ranger)
that will soon be joining my party.
Later,
Chris.

Well, I have an AT Clone with a hard drive and the games still runs slow.
But it's still good. I stopped for a while to play Might and Magic II,
but I'm getting tired with MM2 because of the battles. Anyway, back to
POR. I just saw in June's issue of CGW an ad for POR, Hillfar and The
Curse of Auz? Bonds. Is it out yet?
To add on my formal complaint. I have level 10 chars. When fighting 50-
100 Orcs, it gets pretty boaring. I jstu but my chars on Quick mode and
go watch TV or do something. One time I even went to the store and the
bank and came back and still saw them fighting. I'm still laughiung. I
think POR is great because it's more intelligent. It's not your basic
hack-n-slash type game. It's refreshing to play after playing the Brad's
tales and starting Might and Magic. But the fights you do have, boy, they
take time. I just hope the next one has an opition for really fast

this because the first time I played the game I thought that all of the

I was also curious as to how many of the AD&D magic items that the game
supported. This trial and error also led me to many bugs in the game and
suggest that you all check your versions and upgrade (Free) to the latest

212 messages? Good God!!!
I made it through them but almost fell asleep many times (Sorry).
I suppose what I say here has probably been said (in 212 messages it
better have been!), but before I drift into nevernever land here
is what I think.
The Apple version on my IIGS works just fine as far as speed goes --
except booting up. YUK! 7 different disk swaps! This gets worse
because whenever your party dies you get a wonderful message that
says "The party has been defeated." Wow. Took brains to figure that
out.
Then it stops. Nothing. No back to the character party menu, no back
to the last saved game option, nothing. Except rebooting and swapping
and finding the wheel and figuring out the word (which is REAL hard now
that I lost the wheel, but was still a pain in the a** when I had it).
That's my other complaint about the Apple version is the dang wheel.
Maybe I'm just stupid or unorganized, but once you've lost it, you gotta
reboot (see earlier, this is no easy task) all over again. Enough of my
silly complaints...anyone who read through 212 messages deserves at least
this bit of advice.
To kill the trolls The definitive vguide v1.1
By Kevin Smith
Page 1
Make sure your magic user has sleep -- it has a 50/50 chance of putting
one of the ogres asleep. KEEP THE OGRES ALIVE! DO NOT KEEP A HERO!
The hero has a irritating habit of killing your armo - the ogres.
DO NOT RUN! This gives the trolls all three attacks at a bonus and
face it your characters are dead. Clerics cast Spritual hammer, Mages
use magic missles, fighters use bows, etc until they are dead. Then
finish off the ogres FAST. This isn't much of a problem if you got one
of them asleep. As soon as one of the ogres is wasted, get a character
(Hopefully a mage who has no doubt used all his spells) on top of where
one of the trolls died. KEEP TRACK OF WHERE THEY DIE. If somebody
stands
here they can't get back up. Usually one of the trolls will run off
and try to run through the wall (stupid). Anyway, he will guard and
anyone coming up to him will be claw-claw-bited into shreds. Use arrows
on him too. Then after killing everything, DO NOT continue the battle
(What kind of a twit would ever want to continue a battle when all the
monsters are dead???)
The major task is not getting next to any of the trolls ever.
Hope this helps you, after reading 212 - 213 now messages, you deserve
at least this.....ZZZzzzzzzzzzzz

OGRE GAUNTLETS: The commander of Zhentil Keep has a pair.... I do not
remember Genheris (the deadly lightning bolt - watch out for him he will
fry your party members after you recruit him!!!! he is worth it though, he
is a leve 7 magic user!!) having the Gauntlets of Ogre Power.
BELT OF GIANT STRENGTH: I have not seen one. Curse has a Girdle of the
Dwarven Kind. It is unfortunately bugged!!! It can add +30 hit points.
It can subrtract 30 hit points. It will add one to constitution and
subtract one from charisma... Only in Curse though.... Get a belt or
girdle and all you need it the Hammer of Thunderbolts!!! How about a
telepathic Longsword +5 with detect invisable???!! Unfortunately I have
not found one.... When wearing the gauntlets and transferring to Curse
however, your characters (even female halfling clerics) will retain the
18(00) strength even though the gauntlets are gone when you awake in Curse
and the Tilverton Inn. I applaud the designers for this feature... To
loose such an artifact would be too traumatic... But for the artifact to
have permanent benefits is an added bonus!!! Thank you SSI/TSR!!!
KILLINF TYRANTHRAXUS (SP?): Spread out!!! (do this with all those o who
have breath weapons, lightning bolts and fireballs or cold storm like
(group) spells. Hack him to death with 2-hand swords +2. SCORP: Is he
subject to any 1,2,or 3 level spells like magic missle??? I forget. I
believe he can be fireballed (not sure).. He is lightning bolt resistant.
Mr. T usually kills someone!!!
The Vampire: Must be killed twice. You need to defeat both of the
Specter encounters in the NW portion of Van Halen's Graveyard (it has a

enclosure in the far NE (NE sorry the above sould be NE as well!!) When
you go in you will be facing the Vamp and some dogs (were dogs or wolves).
You need to get at him and hack him to pieces before he charms one of your
group. Otherwise you have to hack your group ber member who was charmed
down, hopefully to unconsiiousness nly only. Killing the charmed member
is a bummer.. After he is killed you will have to go to the cross shaped
building to the SW of the 20x10 you just left and kill the Vamp again.
He will be alone. You should go to the cross shaped building before you
try all this and bless and distribute holy artifacts to his destroyed
coffin.... Hope this helps...

Any member charmed by the vampire can be uncharmed by the charm person
spell or dispel magic on him/her. Another way to keep trolls down is to
stand on the spot where they drop and they won't rise again. They don't
rise for a set period of time so the encounter usually ends befor they get
up To Kill Mr. T: If you go in hacking Mr. T never has a chance (I only
had a character die once out of ten or more replays). He is affected by
magic missile and other spells except lightning bolt (Copper dragon I
beleive is immune).(maby bronze its been a while). Mr. T is also
suseptable to backstab , I hit him for 76 H.P of backstab.

As far as the Apple version of POR, is their any hope for an update,
or maybe even a GS specific version? I'm sitting here with a big hard
disk, multiple megs of RAM, a 3.5 inch disk... and a dusty old floppy
drive whose _only_ exercise these days is POR, when I have the patience to
sit through all the disk swaps needed to even start the game. It seems
that the version for most or all of the other systems use the standard OS
and can be run off hard disk, RAM, whatever. It would be extremely nice if
Apple POR could match that, especially since it isn't disk copy
protected.
Thanks for your time!

ST version of this game will be delayed until January or February of 1990.
according to Brad Chin of SSI!!!
he good news is that they plan to have two simultaneous series of games
using this game system--which will be constantly improved and updated. The
two series are to be the Dragonlance playsetting and the forgotten realms
that pools and curse are now in. The next in this type of SSI game,
which SSI calls a Fantasy Role Playing Epic, will be set in the
Dragonlance world of Krynn. The release date is "early next year (is it
or is it not vaporware???)". This will be followed by the sequel to the
Curse module later-"early next year"!!!
In any case do not confuse these "Fantasy Role Playing Epics" with the
"Action Adventure" or Hillsfar type game or the "Action Game" series like
"Heroes of the Lance." A new type of game is released in the AD&D setting
which will be a "Fantasy War Game" and set in the Dragonlance REalm???
What is the name SCORP, I forgot??? Oh well enough news!!!! Look for the
reappearance of the "Gold Box" "Fantasy Role Playing Epics" "early next
year."
When you finish pools and curse we are in for a dry spell..... Scorp,
friends, fiends, the bar is open!!! How about some spiced meats and
spiced potatoes???? over here by the fire!!!!

SSI, I have a problem...
I'm using Apple POR V1.1. I've been taking the precaution of always using
2 save game disks, and saving game twice each time, once to each disk.
Last night I did that and quit the game. Later when I returned and
restarted, everything went fine until I tried to restore the game. It
replied with something to the effect that there was no saved game on the
disk. I tried the backup, and it said the same thing. A few individual
characters were still on the disk (older version, who I had removed in the
past then reinstated). My characters weren't very far along (2 lev3
fighters, 1 lev3 cleric, 1 lev2/1 thief/mu, and two lev 2 mu's) but due to
my schedule (and the amount of time it takes to boot this game) they
represent a considerable time investment.
Any suggestions on recovering the characters? I've since tested the
drive extensively and it shows no errors or problems. But multiple
attempts to restore the game have all failed. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I've noticed one problem with my POR disks for the C64.
On occasion, it will ask for a disk #, and after I place the disk in the
drive and press a key, it begins reading the disk, and again asks me for
the same disk #. This becomes a large problem when moving through areas,
and saving games. I believe it is the first C64 version.
Other stuff: Whoa, been a long night! Lizard keep was easy, then on I
went to the outpost and the Bucc's tower, or whatever you want to call it.
I ran into some trouble when in the Graveyard, though. Yes, this is a
tough area, and I'm in there with two 6th level fighters, one 7th level
fighter, an 8th level thief, 6th level MU, a 6th level cleric and (2)
Heros from the dueling room. I cleared the entire block out, but since I
visited the dragon, it's suggested that there's a vampire here. I've
searched and searched, i've killed all the zombies, spectres, wraiths,
wights, what have you, but I can't seem to find the vampire. There is an
area in the Northeastern corner that appears to be a room, but I can't
enter(all walled up). Is there someway to open the doorway? Something I
missed?
Also, what happens when you leave the graveyard? Only two of my
characters were standing(the 2 6th level fighters), so I figured it was a
good time to depart. I imagine the place'll be full when I go back, but
I'm hoping for some info from you folx. Thanx.

To Overlord & Blackhawk, Yes elves get that +1 bonus in combat, but
certain areas or places in Pool or Curse may cancel that bonus, (ex: The
sewers in curse). Sorry but POR is not out yet for the Atari ST. Best

U.S. Gold of Europe states that POR for the St will be out in March. U.S.
Gold does a lot of the ports for ST versions of SSI games.

A question - I hope it hasn't been asked yet, but I'm trying not to read
the earlier the earlier messages since I don't want any clues- after
clearing the well a message states that it is now a safe area. Can I now
store some of my items there without them disappearing? Early in the game
I bought everything I thought I might need, and am tired of carrying it
all. Weight penalty, you know. If I could store things like silver items
it would help. Thanks, Larry

To my knowledge you can't drop things and find them again anywhare in the
game The safe place I think refers only to the fact that you can rest
without being attacked.

Help....... I am in the pyramid and getting wasted EVERY time... I throw a
rock in first thru the door on the right, then go in myself and my party
lasts about 5 encounters.... although I know not to attack yhe lizardmen,
they attack me every time I try to camp... also, I have never found any
helpful priest !!!! GREAT PROGRAM !!!!!

don't worry about the lizardmen that attack you. the ones you encounter
later are the ones you should be careful with. I found that there were
limited numbers of encounters in the mazes in the Pyrmid and after having
them all you could rest all you wanted in that section. The helpful priest
is in one of the mazes. There is some good booty in the maze encounters so
don't skip them.
Good Luck,

To: Miami Joe, Here's the fast way thru the maze, move down the main
corridor to the first alcove, turn right and move forward, then teleport.
Move down the hall turn right at intersection, and then move to end of
hall. Throw a stone and then teleport, now follow corridor to the end.
Throw a stone and then teleport, move down the hall, throw a stone and
then teleport. You are now on the 3rd level. Good Luck!! Slim Jim (SSI)

Yes, the graphics and play are excellent, but there are a couple of really
serious bugs. Be sure to mention the 'sticky' +1/+3 sword.
I hope the other games in the series come out for the Mac.

CRUSHER: The review will, at the very least, be uploaded here, in the SSI
library, so you'll be able to see it. I intend to play at least 30 hours
before starting the review (Evan Brooks recommended such, and I have to
agree with it; 30+ hours will give you a good feel for any game).

When a complex, long-term game such as this is involved, I don't see how
an accurate review can be written if the game isn't finished. Should there
be some problem or bug near or at the end, buyers of the game wouldn't
know about it until too late. There may be occasions where deadlines force
a review before the game is done, but those ought to be infrequent.

Well I just ran into the +1/+3 two handed sword bug. Could someone re-say
how/when I can/can't use it; as Well as selling and dropping it. Whenever
we try to arm it it just arms the weapon/item below it (including the LG
long sword held by our thief)!!!!!!
Overlord p.s. We still have the
Ice Gnoll problem, when the game freezes as a gnoll attacks us! (like the
term?) Also in the graveyard, sometimes we have the area map, and
sometimes we don't. Why is that?

Well I am using PoR on a Mac.

Still struggling through this horrid user interface (key use) and have
accomplished quite a bit. Need to know how one gets to the temple of Bane
area? from the JE it would appear to be accessable from the outside but
how does one find it?? Also there are several blocked off areas that in
the Well of Kuto and Cadorna's Textile I can't reach (and that darn
treasure the Jr Council dicussed is probably in a door less area. Any
suggestions on how to reach it - from the text it looks like the knock
spell would work but that apparently is only good for combat, not for
beating on walls{in the IBM version at least}.

Ag, you can't use the knock spell in combat since it only opens doors. I
used it a number of times when exploring to do that. The spell doesn't, of
course, open doors that don't exist (grin). Anyway, I will dig out the
manual and take a look at the map, which might refresh my memory on how to
reach the temple.

To Agnari: To get to the Temple of Bane, you need to leave the town by way
of the docks. Then go to the North side of the bay and you will be in
the wilder wilderness, from here you go thru the wealthy area. There
should be 2 exits heading west into the Temple area (0,4 & 0,11). The
secret treasure can only be found if you have Skullcrusher in your party
and it is located in the SE area of the Codorna Textile house, behind a
secret door. Good Luck, Slim Jim (SSI)

Who or what is skullcrusher? I released junior's flunky from the chains
but as I was already carrying 2 NPCs he couldn't join up - sure hope he
wasn't Crusher. I suspect the secret treasure to be in the that "T"
shaped area in the lower right (SE) section of the Textile grid but as yet
I haven't found a way to get it - sure hope the flunky wasn't Crusher
(have seen signs about him being here) as I don't know how to find/let him
join. Also curious about the thieves well(???) in this grid. Have a lvl
5 or 6 thief and I can't climb down - time I tried she took 69 hp of
damage (good thing she started in tiptop health) and some bozo at the
bottom pointed to his ring - suspect this means she needs a ring of
somekind before being successful. Is that the silver ring I found who
knows where?
While I have everyone's attention, could you explain the significance of
that silly statue I picked up when the priestess was killed - do I need to
lug it around is it useful should I sell it or just pitch it out?
Besides the horendous key arrangement, I really really hate not having a
bank to drop off money/gems till needed later! Also not big on my list is
the fact you can't sell junk to the merchant and then have him like sell
it back at twice the price - thus being an expansive storage locker for
items I don't need now but might in the future and don't want to burden
down the char by lugging the junk around till/when/if it's needed. (BTW
the horrendous key arrangement I am referring to is that the only way to
cycle through the char list (or usually any list) it to repeated ly
hitting the "1" key - I have seen that in a few (1, but cannt remember
which menu) that a "2" will take you back to the top of the characters.
Ok, thanks Scorpia & Slim Jim for the help.

Alert the media, I found the hidden door - darn complete auto mapping.
Add too much auto mapping to my list of suggested improvements - take
alook at M&M II where it maps once you step on that square vice seening
the complete layout as you enter {additionally doors and openings would
really enhance the mapping feature but then only as I walk past and
physically observe the door/opening}.
So possibly you don't need Skullcrusher to get into the hidden treasure
trove - and those weenies in town took it before I could open it {guess
I should have tried my luck at breaking the seal}.
A short question about Podol Plaza, I killed that loud mouth in the bar
and then totalled it {looked like it had been totaled by professionals
- really liked that touch :} - sure hope I didn't need to talk to him.
So my questions remain 1) what about the thieves well in Cadorna Textile
and I think I am going outside. 2) you say the north shore for the
Wealth
/T of Bane area - tried the east shore last night as from the map it
appeared as the most likely path. and 3) ARRRRRRGGGH I hate Ultima type
overhead projections - this outdoors area is ....something unprintable.
Thanks

Ok found the way to the other areas - its not the north boat as
the options are East West Bay and None or (E W B N) and the thieves
area along with the Wealth and T of Bane is achieved by taking a
boat cruise to the Bay option (oh yes before a stickler points out
you also still have the option to the thorn Island & Sokol Keep).
Back soon with more questions - don't you just hate it when somebody has
the WHOLE week off and is playing games 24hours a day (less 5 or so hours
for sleeping and coke/pizza runs ;)

Promise I going to bed soon! Well the thieves area has been cleared and
have been about everywhere but 3 squares in the Wealth - and have killed a
ton of monsters! Cann't find a door to the 3 long 1 wide room in the SE
section of the mansion. Any clues on how to get in there?
And add another sour grapes. I came thru a room that mentioned some-
thing about goblin slaves kill (Y/N) and as I hit Y I realised they might
not have been GOBLIN slaves but slaves of the GOBLINs hope I didnt loose
too much favor/exp/treasure for not freeing them - they were probably
wretchs anyway, yeah thats it it was a mercy killing.
